BARROW 2026: PRESIDENT REJECTS UNITE’S CALL TO WITHDRAW WHITE PAPER

November 6, 2026

President Adama Barrow has rejected UNITE’s demand that the Government withdraw its White Paper on the Local Government Commission of Inquiry, maintaining that it was issued lawfully and does not determine anyone’s eligibility to contest the 2026 presidential election.

In a letter dated November 5, Barrow said the Commission’s report and the White Paper were published in The Gambia Gazette on October 29, ahead of the constitutional deadline of November 11.

He added that eligibility to contest the presidential election is determined by the Independent Electoral Commission and the courts.

The Government continues to stand by its position while respecting the pending appeal by Talib Ahmed Bensouda, Mayor of Kanifing Municipal Council.

Barrow said the Government had fulfilled its constitutional responsibility and would allow the judicial process to run its course.
