Alliances Are Democracy Too

October 2, 2026

Democracy needs pluralism and accountability. But it is a mistake to suggest that opposition parties forming alliances with the governing party necessarily amounts to “capitulation.”

Political freedom also includes the freedom to change positions, negotiate, cooperate and form alliances. Multiparty democracy does not require political parties to remain permanently opposed to one another.

Some of those joining the NPP-led alliance have publicly explained their decisions. Essa Faal has pointed to commitments including a new constitution, the Anti-Corruption Commission and outstanding TRRC recommendations. Professor Sidat Yaffa has cited development, agriculture, security, peace and stability.

These are legitimate political choices made openly within a multiparty democratic system. Describing them as “capitulation” does not make them undemocratic.

Democracy is ultimately about freedom of political choice—including the freedom to compete today and cooperate tomorrow.
